Tyranny – by Professor Dr. Muhammad Karim Al-Kawaz
14/09/2025Yarmouk University College enriched the academic field with the release of the new issue of its peer-reviewed scientific journal (Volume 23, Issue 1 for 2025), which included two qualitative research papers; the first in traditional literary criticism, and the second in contemporary cultural studies.
The truth about Abu Al-Atahiya’s departure from Arabic prosody
In his research, Dr. Ghazai Diraa Al-Taie addressed a common critical issue regarding the poetry of Abu Al-Atahiya (d. 210 AH) and the extent of his adherence to Arabic poetic meters.
The research concludes that the accusation directed at the poet of departing from prosody is not accurate. Although Abu Al-Atahiya himself suggested that he was “greater than prosody,” a close examination of the verses cited to prove this departure shows that they are, in fact, fully compliant with “Al-Khalili prosody.” The researcher believes that ancient prosodists and critics did not scrutinize this accusation sufficiently, but rather repeated what their predecessors said without examination, which the research aims to correct.
Islamic culture from the perspective of cultural studies
For his part, Professor Dr. Muhammad Karim Al-Kawaz presented a study entitled “Islamic Culture from the Perspective of Cultural Studies,” through which he sought to bridge the knowledge gap between the traditional concept of the word “culture” in Arabic dictionaries and what modern Western studies propose.
The research explains that it provided a new definition of culture based on the tools of cultural studies, taking the community of the first Islamic group around Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as the first sample for the study. Based on this, it cited texts from the Holy Quran, Hadith, and Islamic history, focusing on the social aspects that form the core of the definition of culture in contemporary cultural studies.
